When is the best time of the year to catch fish?

The fishing in the Los Suenos – Jaco Beach region is excellent year round, however during certain months of the year, different species of Game fish are more abundant than others. Please visit our Fishing Seasons for more details.

What type of gear & tackle is on the boats?

All of our boats are equipped with state of the art Big Game fishing gear from industry leaders such a Penn, Shimano, Daiwa, Avet, Accurate, and more. Our crews use the lures, teasers, baits, and rigging that are time tested and have proven to be the most productive for our waters.

What time do will the boat leave the dock in the morning? When do we return?

Your charter will depart the dock at 7:30am in the morning and return between 4:00-4:30pm. Please arrive at the dock no later than 7:15am to insure a timely departure and maximize your fishing time. If you need to purchase a fishing license, please arrive 15 minutes earlier.

Is it OK to bring my own Rod/Reel/Lures?

Yes. You are welcome to bring your own big game rod/reel or any favorite lure/teaser you may have. Our boats however, are equipped with state of the art big game fishing tackle, and our Captains and mates are always rigged with the tackle and gear that has proven to have the most success rate in these waters.

What do you do with the fish that is caught?

All Billfish caught on our boats will be live released.  Once they have been brought boat side to insure the best chances of survival, they will be photographed then released. Edible species such as Dorado, Wahoo, Tuna, Snapper, and more, will be filleted, bagged, and iced by your mates on board, at no additional charge. If you offer any of your fillets to your crew, they will greatly appreciate it. We gladly can also direct you to one of the local restaurants, where they will cook your fresh fish for you at a very reasonable price.

Do you offer vacuum sealing services?

Yes, for a small fee, we do offer vacuum sealing services to trim, label and freeze your catch so you can take it home either in your own ice chest or purchase one from us. Ask us about this service.  You’re also welcome to give any of your fish to your captain or bring it back to hotel staff.  Meat is always welcome and NEVER wasted.

Can I take my fish home with me on the plane?

Yes you can take frozen fillets home with you in your checked baggage, however it is a rather difficult process. Regulations state that your fillets must be frozen and in checked baggage only. You can not pack your frozen fillets with any other type of ice, orforeign substance. Here is our suggestion to bring fish home: If you’d like to do so, bring a small ice chest (usually 20-40 quart chests are best and will be fine for the airline weight restrictions) A 40 quart ice chest when filled with frozen fillets weighs just about 50 pounds. You will also need ziplock style bags and some duct tape. At the end of your day, your captain will be happy to clean your fish as part of our service, have it filleted, skinned, steaked or gilled and gutted whole, and bag your fish. It will then be brought back to your hotel to be stored in the a freezer until you are ready to leave.  Before checking out, retrieve your fish. Pack it in your ice chest. You may want to wrap your dirty fishing clothes around it or some crumbled newspaper for extra insulation. Do not add ice. It’s prohibited by the airlines. Duct tape it closed tightly. It will last as long as two days like this.

It is not easy to take fish back with you, but you can if you wish.

Do I need a fishing license?

Yes. Costa Rica requires that all anglers purchase and carry a valid Costa Rica fishing license. You will be required to purchase your Costa Rica fishing license at the dock entrance on the morning of your first day of fishing. The cost is $24.00 and is payable in cash. Your license will be good for one year from the date of purchase. Please come early to allow for the purchase if needed.

How much should we tip the Crew?

A minimum of 15%-20% per day is customary. 20% is normal. Under no circumstances should tipping be based on how many fish you catch.
Our Captains know what you expect and goal is to see you have a trophy day on the water. We are fortunate to have many more successful days on the water here than not, but like anywhere in the world where you fish, there are no guarantees. If your Captain and crew work hard at finding the fish, make multiple moves, change bait frequently, service your needs, and if the fishing is slow, please show your appreciation anyway.

What do I need to bring on the boat for the day?

All of our full day charters include Lunch, Beer, Soda, Bottled Water, Fruit, and Snacks. If you have a personal preference in food or drink, you are welcome to bring it aboard with you. We suggest you bring sun block, hat, sunglasses, a towel, digital camera, any medications you may need, and non marking sneakers or boat shoes.
